Professor Henry Lik Yuen Chan is currently Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics, Head of Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Director of Institute of Digestive Disease, Director of Center for Liver Health, Director of Office of Global Engagement, and Assistant Dean (External Affairs) of Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the course director of Master of Science in Gastroenterology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Professor Chan was the President of the Hong Kong Association for the Study of Liver Diseases from 2005 to 2009. He is the coordinating editor of hepatology for Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, an associate editor of Journal of Hepatology and an associate editor of Hepatology International. He is the co-chairman of the EASL clinical practice guidelines panel on non-invasive tests for liver fibrosis in 2015, and a member of the APASL HBV consensus guideline writing party in 2012 and 2015. He is also the co-chairman of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee on Viral Hepatitis of the Western Pacific Regional Office of World Health Organization since 2015.
Professor Chan’s research interest includes natural history and treatment of chronic hepatitis B, non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and surveillance and prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma. He is a key investigator in more than 25 international trials on antiviral treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, and is the global lead author in publications on peginterferon-alfa, peginterferon-lambda, telbivudine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, and tenofovir alafenamide for the treatment of viral hepatitis B. He has received numerous local, national and international research awards, and has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers in international journals.
